SUMMARY:

Music plays a crucial role in evangelical churches, performed by congregants with an interest in and aptitude for singing. Protestant church choirs are largely composed of amateur singers who do not use their voices professionally. As amateurs, these individuals may lack knowledge regarding vocal health, vocal warm-ups, or proper singing techniques. Semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises using tube phonation have proven to be valuable tools for both vocal conditioning and rehabilitation; they promote positive effects on vocal quality by improving source-filter interaction, thereby fostering vocal economy and glottic efficiency. However, there is still limited scientific knowledge regarding the optimal duration for performing this exercise. Consequently, determining  the ideal duration for specific populations such as amateur singers is essential to ensure the safe application of this technique. This project aims to examine the immediate effects of varying durations of SOVT exercises using tube phonation on the vocal quality and self-perception of amateur singers in Protestant churches. Thirty adults (aged 18 and older, of both genders) who have been singing in an evangelical church for at least one year will be invited to participate. Participants will perform SOVT exercises using tube phonation at various durations and immersion depths. They will undergo vocal recordings in an acoustic booth and complete self-assessment protocols to evaluate dysphonia risk, perceived ease or difficulty of singing (particularly following high vocal demand), and perceived vocal effort. The following protocols will be administered: the Brazilian Dysphonia Screening Tool (Br-DST), the Evaluation of the Ability to Sing Easily (EASE-BR), and the Borg CR10-BR Scale. Participants will also be asked about sociodemographic data (age, gender, education level, marital status, and profession) and singing-related information (hours of singing, duration of singing practice, vocal exercise practice, vocal guidance, and participation in singing lessons). Outcome measures will undergo a normality analysis using the Shapiro-Wilk test to select the appropriate test for data analysis. Repeated-measures ANOVA or the Friedman test will be used to compare the different exercise application time points. A significance level of 5% will be considered for all inferential analyses.
