SUMMARY:

Introduction: Childhood hearing loss affects not only the acquisition of spoken language but also motor development and sensory integration. Evidence indicates that up to 40% of children with hearing loss may present sensory-processing differences, including vestibular and proprioceptive deficits that compromise balance, attention, and learning. In this context, it is pertinent to map the available evidence on the sensory profile of children and adolescents with hearing loss and, in parallel, to propose assessment tools that leverage telehealth to enable the early identification of sensory and motor differences in this population. Purposes: Study 1 aims to map the literature on the sensory profile of children and adolescents with hearing loss, informing understanding of its repercussions and guiding assessment and intervention practices. Study 2 aims to validate a teleconsultation protocol for identifying the sensory profile and motor development of children with hearing loss, assessing its feasibility and applicability in clinical settings. Methods: Study 1 adheres to Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodological guidance and the PRISMA-ScR checklist. The review protocol has been developed, and Phase 1—title and abstract screening—has begun. The search strategy covers international and regional databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, SciELO, and LILACS), plus supplementary searches in Google Scholar and ProQuest. Eligibility criteria were defined using the PCC mnemonic (Population: children and adolescents with hearing loss; Concept: sensory profile; Context: clinical or educational settings). Study 2 is a cross-sectional, observational-analytical study employing mixed quantitative and qualitative approaches, conducted at a philanthropic hearing-health service in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The planned sample comprises 30 children aged 6–42 months who use hearing aids or cochlear implants. Data collection combines chart review; administration of the Sensory Profile 2 via teleconsultation and in person by masked researchers; in-person assessment with the Bayley-III; and a clinical sensory-integration evaluation conducted by a licensed occupational therapist-investigator. Two pilot cases were conducted to inform preliminary feasibility analyses of the protocol. Preliminary results: In Study 1, the review protocol and a search strategy validated by the research team have been completed. Phase 1 screening is in progress, with advancement to full-text review anticipated. In Study 2, the two pilot cases—both bilateral cochlear implant users (S1, 36 months; S2, 40 months)—indicated that administering the Sensory Profile 2 via teleconsultation is feasible, although enhanced clarification of parental queries is advisable. Notably, responses during in-person administration were comparable to those obtained via teleconsultation. Both participants showed differences in at least one sensory quadrant. Bayley-III results confirmed delays across language, motor, socio-emotional, and adaptive behavior subtests, underscoring the need for comprehensive developmental assessments in children with hearing loss. Conclusions: Integrating the scoping review with validation of a teleconsultation protocol enables both the mapping of knowledge gaps and the proposal of solutions applicable to Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS). Preliminary findings reinforce the relevance of investigating the sensory profile in children with hearing loss and suggest that teleconsultation can optimize multidimensional assessment, facilitating early therapeutic planning and expanding access to rehabilitation services. Subsequent phases are expected to consolidate robust evidence to inform clinical practice and public policies focused on the development of children with hearing loss.
