SUMMARY:

Parent training programs, especially those focused on positive feedback for behaviors that foster positive parent–child interactions, contribute to enriching the linguistic environment at home and, consequently, to the development of children with hearing loss. In this context, it is essential to address the communicative needs of each family, which requires a precise assessment of interaction. This work was divided into two studies: one intervention study, which aims to describe the effects of parental training through televideofeedback on the outcomes of a child with hearing impairment and their family; and one validation study, which seeks to analyze the content and responsiveness of an instrument for assessing parent-child interaction. The intervention study consists of a case report, in which 20 televideofeedback sessions were conducted with the parents of a child using a cochlear implant. To evaluate the effects, clinical assessment protocols and neurophysiological measures of cortical activation in response to speech stimuli were applied using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) before and after the intervention. Analysis of the clinical protocols indicated gains in the child’s auditory and linguistic development, as well as in family self-efficacy. Measures related to interaction assessment and cortical activation are currently under analysis. In the validation study, content analysis will be conducted with 10 experts, who will assess the relevance, clarity, and adequacy of each item of the instrument. To enable its use in clinical practice and research, the instrument’s responsiveness to changes will also be analyzed. The expected impact of this work is to highlight the importance of family interactions and parental training models, such as televideofeedback, for the therapeutic progress of children with hearing impairment, as well as to provide a Portuguese tool for assessing parent-child interaction. In this way, therapists will be able to intervene in a targeted manner, using parental training strategies to promote attuned interactions and support child development.
