CONSTRUCTION OF A MANUAL OF NURSING PROCEDURES FOR CARE OF NEWBORNS ADMITTED TO AN INTERMEDIATE CARE UNIT
Newborn; Nursing Care; Intensive Care Units, Neonatal.
Neonatal Intermediate Care Units offer adequate technical, structural, and human resources for specialized care of medium-risk newborns, requiring nurses trained to perform safe and standardized procedures. This study aimed to construct a nursing procedures manual for the care of neonates admitted to a Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit of a municipal maternity hospital in the metropolitan region of Rio Grande do Norte. This is a methodological development research consisting of three stages: the first stage involved a scoping review to map, in the scientific literature, the nursing procedures commonly performed in the Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit, the study setting; the second stage involved constructing the content of the manual, considering the findings of the scoping review; and the third stage involved organizing the manual. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in the form of tables and figures. The manual was structured around five thematic axes: gastric intubation, peripheral venous catheterization, care for regulating body temperature in a radiant heat heated crib, and collection of samples for blood and urine cultures. For each procedure, a standardized text was established, comprising definition, indication, legal competence, necessary materials, technical description, nursing care, and complications. This study created, as a technical/technological product, a nursing procedures manual for the care of neonates admitted to a Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit. It is expected to contribute to the updating of care practices, the improvement of nursing care, and the strengthening of neonatal care safety.
