DEVELOPMENT OF AN ELECTRONIC FORM FOR SHIFT HANDOVER BETWEEN NURSES IN AN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
Keywords: Transfer of patient responsibility; Nursing; Intensive Care Unit; Patient safety.
INTRODUCTION: Shift handover is an essential moment in nursing practice, responsible for ensuring the continuity, comprehensiveness, and safety of care, especially in Intensive Care Units. Failures in this process are associated with an increased risk of adverse events. Therefore, this project aims to develop a technological product for shift handover forms, in order to standardize communication and improve patient safety. OBJECTIVE: To develop a shift handover form among bedside nurses working in an Intensive Care Unit. METHODOLOGY: This is a Convergent Care Research study with a qualitative approach. The study will be conducted in a General Intensive Care Unit of a hospital affiliated with the state network of the Unified Health System. Participants will be nurses working in the unit for at least one year, selected intentionally. Data collection will take place between May and June, through focus groups, using a semi-structured script that seeks to identify the perceptions, needs, and knowledge of the unit's nurses regarding the content and format of the electronic shift handover form. The statements will be transcribed in full and analyzed using content analysis, in the modality of Thematic Analysis, as proposed by Bardin. The research will be conducted subject to approval by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. To support the analysis of the discourses, an integrative literature review will be developed using the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, and
CINAHL databases, with the following descriptors: "transfer of patient responsibility", "nursing" and "intensive care unit". Articles published between 2021 and 2025, available in full text in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, that address the content and strategies used during nursing shift handover will be selected to support the construction of the technical product of this project. EXPECTED RESULTS: This study aims to promote effective
communication and the recording of essential information during shift handover with the active participation of general Intensive Care Unit nurses, managing
