The rapid growth of the global economy in recent years has required a huge demand for energy sources to meet the needs of large industries. Furthermore, there is growing concern regarding the search for renewable sources, aiming to reduce greenhouse gases. Thus, one alternative that has been attracting considerable attention in recent years is energy recovery in thermal processes. It is known that a significant amount of thermal energy is wasted worldwide every year. This can be easily seen in industries where saturated water vapor, resulting from heating processes, is released into the environment without being used. Thus, recovering this vapor and applying it to the production cycle would lead to a reduction in the total energy consumed in a given process. Furthermore, it would contribute to reducing carbon emissions by industries that burn fossil fuels to generate energy for heating water or any other substance containing water. A widely used technique to attempt to recover this energy is mechanical vapor recompression, which consists of recovering otherwise wasted steam, compressing it until it superheats, and reusing it in the production cycle. Therefore, the objective of this research was to build a machine capable of recovering and superheating steam—using a piston compressor—and to study its thermal properties. This allowed us to determine the amount of energy recovered and saved by the system. After testing, a gain of over 30% in the system's vaporization rate with the compressor was observed, with a recovered energy of 21.31%.
