Contemporary discussions on Social Housing (SH) have highlighted the need to understand how housing projects respond to changing living patterns and the everyday demands of their users. In this context, this research focuses on the discrepancies between designed space and the space effectively appropriated, used, and transformed by residents, understanding these discrepancies as expressions of the relationships among architectural configuration, spatial appropriation, and housing quality. Accordingly, the study seeks to investigate how the design configuration of these housing units conditions the processes of spatial appropriation, use, and transformation carried out by residents, as well as what the discrepancies between the conceived design and actual occupancy reveal about the architectural quality of these units. The central argument of this research is that social housing developments, when conceived through rigid spatial configurations and limited adaptability, fail to adequately respond to the diversity of contemporary ways of living. This mismatch becomes evident through the processes of appropriation, use, and transformation undertaken by residents, making Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) a fundamental tool for identifying design inadequacies and generating insights for the future improvement of housing architecture. The study is based on the hypothesis that the configurational rigidity and limited incorporation of flexibility attributes in social housing developments produce discrepancies between the designed space and the space effectively appropriated by residents, revealing architectural inadequacies in addressing the diversity of contemporary living practices. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to analyze, from a Post-Occupancy Evaluation perspective, the processes of spatial appropriation in social housing developments, investigating how the design configuration of housing units conditions the uses, adaptations, and transformations carried out by residents, as well as what these processes reveal about the architectural quality of such housing. The research adopts a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach grounded in the principles of Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE). The methodological procedures include documentary analysis of architectural projects, semi-structured interviews, walkthroughs, technical surveys of housing units, the development of use maps, and the application of spatial appropriation assessment forms. The research universe comprises housing developments located in João Pessoa (PB), Recife (PE), and Natal (RN), with the Ruy Frazão Residential Complex, located in Recife (PE), serving as the initial case study. Partial findings indicate that the observed appropriation processes are not solely the result of residents’ individual preferences but are strongly conditioned by the architectural configuration of the housing units. Patterns were identified regarding the maintenance of the original functional zoning, the frequent reorganization of furniture as a strategy for spatial adaptation, and the adoption of different occupancy arrangements associated with the quantity and dimensions of furniture present in the dwellings. Limitations in the adaptive capacity of the housing units were also identified. The adaptations carried out by residents, particularly those aimed at expanding kitchen use areas and reorganizing interior spaces, reinforce the need for more flexible and adaptable design solutions. It is expected that these findings, together with those still to be achieved throughout the research, will contribute to improving the architectural quality of social housing and to the development of housing projects that are more closely aligned with the real needs of their users.
