SUMMARY:

The thesis argues that the participation of people without formal technical training in architecture can be expanded in design processes—including technological aspects—through intuitive tools and collaborative strategies that transform tacit and situated knowledge into an active force in the design process, fostering more contextualized, viable, and empowering solutions. Traditionally, the participation of non-specialists has been restricted to functional aspects of building design, while other decisions remain within the technical domain. In this context, the question arises as to whether these individuals can transcend such limits and influence dimensions beyond mere function. The central hypothesis holds that the scope of action for non-specialists in architectural design can be expanded when the design process is supported by tools that operate intuitively and incorporate heuristic strategies to address specific technical and technological issues. In this sense, the objective is to understand whether and how people without specialized training are capable of devising solutions to everyday problems involving technical and technological aspects when they participate in design processes mediated by intuitive tools and collaborative practices. To this end, a case study was conducted with a group of women from the Modelo II settlement in João Câmara, Rio Grande do Norte, in the state’s semi-arid region, using an action-research approach that included charrette-style design workshops. The workshops were facilitated by a physical tool developed specifically for this purpose, focused on projects using Caatinga wood structures for equipment supporting production and photovoltaic energy generation. The results demonstrated that the tool promoted reflection-in-action, self-learning, experimentation, understanding of structural behavior, and the mobilization of design strategies analogous to those used by architects, culminating in the formulation of the productive duplex, later validated by a full-scale mockup. By making certain design aspects intelligible, the tool also produced new forms of exclusion, requiring a specific type of process management: advisory services. This led to the formulation of the terme “collaborative advisory service,” an approach grounded in Freirean pedagogy that redefines the architect’s role from solution provider to socio-technical mediator. It is concluded that the instrumentalization of tacit knowledge, combined with co-laborative mediation, broadens the involvement of non-specialists in the technical and technological dimensions of the project, challenges the traditional segmentation of knowledge, and favors political agency and contextualized solutions, although such results remain conditioned by the circumstances in which the research was conducted.
