SUMMARY:

This research is situated within the context of transformations in Architecture and Urbanism education resulting from the emergency adoption of remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly regarding the teaching practices of freehand drawing, traditionally associated with face-to-face processes and the “architectural literacy” of design thinking. In this scenario, the study problematizes how remote methodologies impacted the application, development, and effectiveness of this essential formative competency. The general objective of this research is to understand the impacts, conflicts, and pedagogical possibilities that emerged from the integration of technology and remote teaching of freehand drawing during the pandemic period, between 2020 and 2023, in Architecture and Urbanism programs in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Specifically, the study aims to emphasize the relevance of freehand drawing as a formative narrative in architecture, to map the pedagogical practices adopted in remote teaching, and to analyze the pedagogical adaptations and practices arising from these experiences in students’ professional education. From a methodological perspective, this is an exploratory and descriptive study with a mixed-methods (qualitative–quantitative) approach, developed through bibliographic research, document analysis, and the collection of primary data via questionnaires and interviews with faculty members involved during the period. The investigation focuses on three higher education institutions: UFRN, UFERSA, and UNI-RN, selected based on the most recent quality indicators from the Brazilian Ministry of Education. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques and organized into thematic categories. The results indicate that, despite the inherent limitations of remote teaching, innovative pedagogical practices were developed, enabling the continuity of freehand drawing instruction in virtual environments through the use of digital technologies, interactive platforms, and synchronous and asynchronous strategies. However, significant challenges were also identified, including difficulties in student engagement, limitations in the practical mediation of content, and impacts on the consolidation of design skills, particularly regarding the sensory and cognitive dimensions of drawing. It is concluded that remote experiences contributed to expanding pedagogical possibilities in the teaching of freehand drawing, while also revealing weaknesses in the educational process when dissociated from in-person contexts. The study highlights the need for a balanced integration between analog and digital practices, pointing toward the development of hybrid methodologies that enhance teaching and learning processes and contribute to the education of future architects and urbanists, as well as to the structuring of pedagogical and institutional frameworks aligned with technological advancements and potential emergency scenarios.
