SUMMARY:

Brazil was one of the main destinations for the forced migration of enslaved Africans. Of the 10,429,215 enslaved people who arrived alive in the Americas between 1551 and 1866, 4,864,377 landed in Brazil, or 46.64% of that total (https://www.slavevoyages.org/assessment/estimates). Here, overwork, unhealthy conditions, mistreatment, and unjust punishments led them to flee (Karasch 1996), forming communities that, according to Gomes (2015), were initially known as mocambos and, later, as quilombos, terms originating from Central Africa that designated improvised camps used in contexts of war or the capture of enslaved people. The spatial organization of these communities and the use of natural resources expressed an ancestral way of life rooted in the experience of life in their homeland. This work aims to investigate the continuities and transformations in the form and uses of the physical space of the Quilombola community Família Magalhães, of Kalunga descent and located on the banks of the Paranã River, a region 600 km from Goiânia and 330 km from Brasília-DF. The presence of enslaved people in Goiás dates back to the colonizing expeditions of Bartolomeu Bueno, the Anhanguera, in 1722, and the mining cycle in the region (Baiochi 1999). This case study intends to verify to what extent the organization of the community space and the dwellings of the aforementioned community reveal remnants that refer to their enslaved ancestors, directly or indirectly. The analysis will be developed from the dialogue between the collected sources – various surveys, including in situ – and academic works and publications on the subject and on the region, in order to identify if and to what extent elements of the past in the inhabited space persist in the current community.
