SUMMARY:

This work investigates territorial transformations of Fortaleza’s central coastline, assessing the impacts of the diffusion process of modernizations on the urban landscape. It examines the historical formation and reconfiguration of coastal areas such as Centro, Praia de Iracema, and Moura Brasil – neighborhoods traditionally marked by the presence of the city’s first port and by the “areias”, beaches and dunes that functioned as alternative territories to the normalized urban center, inhabited by Fortaleza’s working-class population. The research focuses on coastal strips that have since vanished, whether due to coastal erosion or socio-spatial reconfiguration: Praia Formosa, once traversed by the tracks of the Alfândega railway branch and home to the Arraial Moura Brasil settlement, and Praia do Peixe, a former fishing village – both were integral to the dynamics of the old port area. The temporal scope begins in 1863 with the Urban Expansion Plan, considered a milestone in the shift of urban structure and city control, and extends to an analysis of recent and ongoing urban transformations. The main objective is to understand the processes of erasure and resistance of representative forms of the past within the urban landscape of Fortaleza’s central coast, constructing a temporal narrative that moves from the present to the past and from the present toward the future, projecting scenarios in light of contemporary pressures and exploring possibilities for the persistence of popular territories and cultural heritage. Methodologically, the study adopts Henri Lefebvre’s regressive-progressive method, integrating a theoretical-conceptual framework, embodied observation, documentary research, and cartographic production.
