SUMMARY:

INTRODUCTION: The involvement of patients and the public (PPI) in research that concerns them is an increasingly common reality, however, strategies to facilitate the engagement of participants are needed. In this sense, researchers from the Netherlands have built a tool called the Involvement Matrix, whose objective is to involve young people in research, as well as their families. Young people with chronic health conditions with severe motor and communication limitations, such as cerebral palsy (CP), are rarely consulted regarding aspects related to their health care. This public, especially those young people with CP classified through the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) at levels IV and V generally present important restrictions to participate in leisure activities and usually receive interventions that prioritize results in terms of function and structure body, many of them without scientific evidence and which do not incorporate one of the main outcomes in rehabilitation, which is participation. OBJECTIVE: To collaboratively develop an intervention program for young people with CP GMFCS levels IV and V aged between 12 and 17 years, which promotes participation in leisure activities, based on the opinion of young people and their families, as well as the rehabilitation professionals who work with this audience. METHODS: This is a qualitative and participatory action research study that will involve young people with CP, their families and rehabilitation professionals who will co-design, through the use of the Involvement Matrix, an intervention for increase participation in leisure activities. Focus groups will be organized with the participants in order to collectively build the intervention, based on the ingredients of established protocols. Semi-structured interviews will be carried out in order to identify the research participants' impressions regarding the study design, as well as the co-constructed intervention proposal. EXPECTED RESULTS: The study will enable the construction of an intervention aimed at young people with CP classified as levels IV and V in the GMFCS, focusing on the outcome of participation in the ICF, jointly prepared by the interested public (youth with CP and their families), as well as rehabilitation professionals. In addition, it will enable the dissemination of PPI in rehabilitation research in the context of Brazil.
