SUMMARY:

Our research arose from concerns experienced at the Winston Churchill Full-Time State School in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. In this context, we observed fragmentation in the Integrated Technical Secondary Education in Environment programme: Physical Education (PE) remained restricted to the sports court, while the environment emerged as a distant theme, addressed in other components. This highlighted a formative and theoretical gap, as there are few studies on the articulation between PE and Environmental Education (EE) in Professional and Technological Education (PTE). Thus, we formulated the question: how to articulate Physical Education and Environmental Education in the curriculum of Integrated Technical Secondary Education in Environment, aiming at the interdisciplinary training of students? The general objective was to articulate an intervention of Physical Education with Environmental Education in Integrated Technical Secondary Education, using environmental practices as an interdisciplinary experience. The specific objectives were: to identify historical aspects and fundamentals of Environmental Education, seeking links with physical practices in Physical Education; to implement pedagogical strategies to integrate Environmental Education actions into Physical Education, in light of national curriculum guidelines and student perceptions; to identify thematic axes that articulated pedagogical, contextual, socio-emotional and transformative dimensions (conceptual and attitudinal) dimensions emerging from observations and data readings; to identify emerging categories resulting from student learning, present in speeches, records and productions; to structure and substantiate an e-book, an educational resource from the study, to share this knowledge with teachers in the field. We anchored ourselves in Paulo Freire's dialogical perspective, in critical-overcoming Physical Education and critical Environmental Education, articulated with complexity theory, understanding environmental practices as bodily actions of Environmental Education. We developed participatory qualitative research with 31 first-year students, understood as co-researchers. We used questionnaires (pre- and post-intervention), conversation circles, and participant observation (with field diary records), as well as audiovisual recordings and student productions (written records and materials produced in activities, such as diagnoses, feedback, and socialisations). This data set was analysed using Categorical Content Analysis. The intervention took place in ten classes, distributed in three progressive stages and examined based on four themes of analysis. Throughout the course, the activities broadened the meaning of Physical Education beyond sports practice, strengthening a pedagogical practice centred on care. In the final discussion circle, the students redefined the school as a possible territory for intervention and recognised the body as a mediator of ethical choices and social participation. The results indicate signs of increased critical socio-environmental awareness, strengthened youth leadership and ties to the territory, as well as the proposal of an educational resource applicable to PTE and aligned with the State Policy on Environmental Education of RN and the National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC).
