SUMMARY:

The study investigated how gender relations influenced the perception of 6th grade elementary school students about sports, adopting a qualitative, descriptive, and explanatory approach, conducted at the Olívio Ribeiro Campos Municipal School, in João Pessoa -PB, in 2024. Although the class had 34 students, only 10 participated - 8 boys and 2 girls - who met the criteria of attendance, had authorization from their parents or guardians, and participated in accordance with the ethical guidelines of CEP/UFRN and CONEP Resolution No. 510/2016, ensuring confidentiality and voluntariness. For data collection, at different times during regular classes, a structured questionnaire focused on associations of sports with gender and a semi-structured interview were applied to deepen reports on experiences and beliefs about sports, always aiming at confidentiality and comfort for the participants. Thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) allowed us to identify and categorize patterns of perception based on references to sex and gender (Butler, 2023; Louro, 2017), processes of genderization in sports (Altmann, 2015; Sampaio et al., 2014), and pedagogical implications in school physical education (Moraes; Dias; Oliveira, 2023). In the questionnaire results, the sports most associated with men were Greco-Roman wrestling, basketball, rugby, and shooting, while in the interviews, soccer emerged as the main symbol of male sportsmanship; the practices most associated with the female universe, in both instruments, were gymnastics and volleyball. The interviews revealed that gender stereotypes reinforced barriers to participation, as students reported fear of criticism or ridicule if they chose sports “inappropriate” for their gender, and that the support or judgment of family members and peers decisively influenced their choice and persistence in each sport; When imagining themselves belonging to the opposite gender, only one participant maintained their original preference, highlighting the strong tension between social norms and individual desires. In addition, it became clear that the active involvement of the family - the main source of support expected by students - and the media representation of athletes and sports are determining factors in legitimizing sports choices and deconstructing stereotypes. These findings indicate that schools - and Physical Education in particular - need to take on a central role in questioning and deconstructing these norms, joining forces with families and the media to promote welcoming and reflective teaching practices, broaden horizons for varied physical experiences, and value diversity in all activities.
