SUMMARY:

This study investigates the role of extracurricular sports in the integral development of
students enrolled in the Integrated High School Program at the Federal Institute of Rio
Grande do Norte (IFRN), based on the perspectives of former students. Focusing on the
sports experiences lived on the Pau dos Ferros and Santa Cruz campuses, the research
draws on the author's professional background as a teacher and coach to understand how
participation in sports influenced the academic, personal, and professional trajectories of the
participants. Adopting a qualitative and descriptive approach, the study collected data
through open-ended questionnaires and spontaneous video testimonials submitted by former
student-athletes. Data analysis followed the methodology proposed by Bogdan and Biklen
(1994), with categories emerging from participants narratives, emphasizing an interpretative
reading of their lived experiences. Theoretically, the work is grounded in the principles of
omnilateral education, Integral Education, and Edgar Morin's Theory of Complexity, framing
sports as an educational practice both within the Physical Education curriculum and in
extracurricular settings. The theoretical framework also includes critical and historical
Physical Education authors, tracing the trajectory of school sports from the English model to
its appropriation in Brazil, with particular attention to the IFRN context. The findings indicate
that extracurricular sports significantly contributed to the development of values such as
discipline, cooperation, responsibility, and perseverance, as well as positively impacting
school retention, the formation of affective bonds, and students' life project planning.
However, the data also highlight ongoing challenges, such as the need for stronger
alignment between sports programs and the institutional pedagogical project, and the need
to overcome the selective, performance-centered logic still present in some practices. As an
educational product, a documentary featuring participant testimonies was produced to
disseminate the findings and encourage reflection on the importance of sports in the
comprehensive development of youth. The study concludes that, when pedagogically guided
and aligned with the principles of Integral Education, extracurricular sports can serve as a
powerful tool for human development in Federal Institutes.
