SUMMARY:

Mineral coal is a solid fossil fuel that in the burning process generates large volumes of waste. As it is a waste that contains heavy metals, its disposal in inappropriate places causes great environmental impacts. In order to minimize waste management problems, this material was used in the synthesis process of zeolites, which are porous crystalline materials based on aluminosilicates. The residue used as a study was supplied by SATC Criciúma - SC and has 24.09% Al2O3 and 54.25% SiO2 in its chemical composition. Synthesis studies using light coal ash in order to obtain zeolite LTA were carried out, both by hydrothermal means and alkaline fusion, and the combination of the two methods, varying parameters such as: crystallization time, Na / T ratio, ultrasonification, temperature of agitation of the gel and alkaline melting temperature of the residue. The crystallization temperature of the samples occurred at 100 ° C in static. The results obtained were more efficient in the syntheses carried out by alkaline fusion treatment, however this method has a certain disadvantage because it uses high temperatures such as 200 ° C, 300 ° C and 500 ° C, representing a high energy expenditure, in the fusion process between the residue and the NaOH. However, in terms of crystalline material, the result of the synthesis showed an efficiency of 72.7% in 2 hours of crystallization. In the study of hydrothermal synthesis, the zeolite LTA obtained a good crystallinity close to 54% by applying ultrasound of the residue, stirring temperature of the synthesis gel under reflux at 80 ° C, adding sodium aluminate after 2h of stirring. with crystallization time of 4 hours. After obtaining the product, they were characterized by X-ray diffraction techniques and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was possible to conclude that the use of light coal ash presents favorable conditions for the synthesis of LTA zeolite, being able to plan future projects of a pilot plant on an industrial scale to use this residue in the production of materials with greater added value.
