Alternative materials to portland cement have been extensively studied in recent years for application in oil well plug and abandonment operations. Among these materials, thermosetting resins have stood out due to their rheological and mechanical properties being compatible with the application in oil wells. Polyester resins stand out due to their low production cost and excellent rheological properties. So, this work aims to study polyester resin compositions for application in oil well abandonment operations. The resin was characterized by infrared where characteristic bands of polyester and styrene monomers were identified. Systems containing pure resin and resin with mineral fillers were prepared and tested. Compressive strength (RC), rheology and sedimentation tests were performed. The pure resin showed an RC value above 90 MPa, a result well above the minimum required for flock operations (7 MPa). The rheological parameters characterized the systems as a Newtonian fluid. The addition of 5% of mineral fillers, by mass of resin, showed a high RC value, decreased the apparent viscosity of the resin. Based on the results presented, the polyester resin has shown promise for application in plugs and abandonment operations of oil wells
