Pillared clays (PILC) have interesting characteristics due to their high specific area and porosity compared to natural clay, as well as the presence of specific sites inserted by the pillars. Such materials are selective heterogeneous catalysts and adsorbents. However, we can modify them to further extend these properties by proposing the synthesis of pillarized clays with larger than traditional cations. As the objective of studying and improving the pillarization methods was proposed a method for the synthesis of a pillaring agent called Al30 and the insertion of this ion in montmorillonite clays. All materials obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and chemical analysis, NMR, MET, SEM. Al30 pillared clay showed an X-ray diffractogram with superior reflections, which was reported by Zhul et al. Through the analyzes performed, it was possible to identify the most favorable conditions for the pillarization of clays either with keggin ion13 or Keggin ion30. The syntheses of the pillar solutions were performed by varying the temperature, the reagent concentration and the heating time. The pillars were performed by varying the temperature, the contact time of the clay with the pillaring agent and different pre-expansion methods (water, surfactant (CTMA-Br) and ethylene glycol). The procedures resulted in materials with greater basal spacing showing efficiency in the new procedures, besides the drastic reduction in the synthesis time.
