RESUMO:

Glycerol is a highly functional compound, which has three hydroxyl groups in its structure, and that is why in its oxidation process many high value-added products can be formed. The main objective of this work was to perform catalytic oxidation of glycerol using low temperatures, which, for catalytic processes, is not very common. The process carried out in aqueous and basic medium had as oxidant reagents and catalysts the silver ions. It was studied how the variation of reagent concentrations, pH and temperature influence the conversion rate of glycerol into formed products, and the selectivity to these products. These results were analyzed using the Gas Chromatography technique. By means of the Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry technique, the consumption of silver ions was analyzed, that is, how much of these ions underwent the reduction and reacted process. For this analysis, the results point to a total consumption of the silver ions, thus proving its condition as a reagent limiting the reaction. Some results of Gas Chromatography point to an inversely proportional relationship between the conversion of glycerol to its oxidation products and the selectivity to these products. The higher the conversion, the lower the selectivity values.
