RESUMO:

The concept of biorefinery has been developing in recent years due to its environmental and economic appeal. Industry-generated biomass residues that are traditionally burnt, used as fuel with low calorific potential in boilers or treated as environmental problems are converted into higher value-added products analogous to an oil refinery process. Multifunctional additives, also known as Multi Purpose Additives (MPA) are widely used in the industry for their versatility in reach demands in various segments, which increases the competitiveness and market options of these products. In this work, Kraft lignin - paper industry waste and pyrolytic lignin - pyrolysis residue of lignocellulosic biomass - were chemically modified through the carboxymethylation reaction to form carboxymethyl lignin (CML). In order to add value to this bioproduct, CML from Kraft lignin (CML Kraft) and CML from pyrolytic lignin (CML Pyro) were tested as a retarder additive in cement pastes - for the oil exploration sector – and as Scale inhibitor - for oil production sector. The efficiency as a retarder additive was attested by consistometry tests according to API RP 10B. In the oil production area, the efficiency as scale inhibitor was attested by dynammic scale test according to NACE 31105. The results shows that both CML Kraft and CML Pyro can act as multifunctional additives for oil exploration and production (E & P) areas. The CML Kraft presented higher efficiency in all tests peformed. It is proposed a mechanism of action common to both applications based on the complexation of calcium ions (common for the effect as retarder and inhibitor) and also the complexation of barium ions, as evidenced by the Dynamic Scale test. The proposed multipurpose additives meet current biorefinery concepts by adding value to waste from industrial processes. It is expected that the elucidation of the effects of a chemical additive in wich origin and chemical composition are known could lead to the enrichment of the literature and thus the development of the E & P sector of oil and gas industry, since the chemical additives used in this sector are, in most cases, intellectual property of large service companies, and little is known about their composition and how they chemically work in a water/cement system.
