RESUMO:

By rapid economic and industrial development, Rio Grande do Norte is inserted in this scenario as the largest producer of salt, sodium chloride, the country and holder of 97% of all salt produced.  The Salina Diamante Branco  -  SDB in Galinhos, dismisses the whole process of  brine  in  the  study  area  in  question,  the  Tomás-Galinhos  estuary.  In  this  context,  it  is essential  to  assess  the  possible  impacts  of  this  salt  activity  in  adjacent  estuaries.  Thus, it carried out a monitoring of water quality and sediment to obtain an environmental assessment, including indicators of pollution, the Water Quality  Index  -  IQA  and Toxicidez Index. The samples  were  collected  during  two  years  on  four  points  from  May  2014  to  May  2016.  All results are properly related to the standards required by resolutions 357 of 17 March 2005 and

344  of  March  25,  2004  ,  both  of  the  National  Environment  Council  -  CONAMA.  For non listed in the cited standards parameters, these were evaluated before its variability in the water body.  The  vast  majority  of  results  presented  without  great  variations  while  maintaining  the natural  characteristics  of  the  river,  a  fact  that  led  the  IQA  all  points  as  quality  Good.  In contrast,  some  levels  of  oxygen  dissolved,  dissolved  nutrients  and  chlorophyll  obtained indicated a tendency to contamination by organic matter. The high levels of phosphorus, also in  the  sediment  have  confirmed  this  trend.  However,  these  contaminants  are  from  other

activities in the surrounding communities. Regarding metals in water, almost all were below the ICP-OES detection limit, indicating that these metals tend to be adduced by the dynamics of  tidal  or  precipitates  in  the  sediment,  characterized  as  IT  equal  to  1,  i.e.  absent contamination. Zinc metal was detected only in water but also generated IT equals 1, it was within the required limits. Regarding metals in sediment only mercury and cadmium were not detected for the other gifts, were obtained also no toxicity. Nickel was the only metal with content above the ceiling, however, the content of the classified as level 1 in which it is not considered as likely to adverse effects to biota. The high values  found calcium, magnesium and salinity showed the direct influence of the sewage and its accumulation, also related to tidal flows and rain.
