RESUMO:

Information systems have become increasingly robust, working with high volumes of data, objects and data processes. In the context of the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN), a system was developed to attend all the administrative and academic activities of the institution: SUAP, Unified System of Public Administration. Over the course of 11 years, the application has evolved from just one module to over 40, in addition to the dizzying growth of users - which today permeates the number of 35 thousand. These aspects often impact directly and negatively on systems performance, leading software architects to seek alternatives to better scale their applications. This ability of a system to adapt by demand increases can be achieved by adding more computing resources to a single server (scale-up), or by adding more servers working together, allocating load to each other (defined as scaled-out). However, not always scaling purely an application is sufficient for the perceived performance improvement, as occurred in the IFRN. Even after high investments in infrastructure, SUAP's performance problems persist, resulting in constant user complaints, especially at times of peak access to the system - even recording downtime periods under these circumstances. Therefore, to make better use of the available hardware structure, it is necessary to understand the reasons for these performance failures, so that these computational resources are used in a dynamic and growing way, managed more efficiently and able to withstand surplus loads without prejudice to the stability of the application. Thus, the need to evaluate more comprehensive aspects of the current architecture of the application is presented, so that elements impair it's performance may be known. In order to identify components that can be improved, this paper seeks to make a formal evaluation of the architecture of the IFRN system through the Architecture Trade-off Analysis Method (ATAM). Allied to this, will be carried out software tests that allow the identification of factors that determine their points of slowness. From there, it is expected to propose improvements and strategies that will evolve the SUAP in terms of stability.
