SUMMARY:

Internationalization is conceptually presented in the specialised literature as the process of increasing involvement in international markets, which can take place in many different forms such as foreign direct investment (FDI), joint ventures, IPOs, technology exchange and exports. As such, it is a phenomenon that encompasses different types of organizations, businesses from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to multinational enterprises (MNEs), universities, technology centres, government agencies and even several representatives from civil society, embracing local and international actors in a complex, multifaceted and ever-evolving ecosystem. ApexBrasil is the Brazilian export and investment promotion agency, responsible for promoting Brazilian products and services abroad and attracting foreign investors. Given the importance of the internationalization of companies for economic development, its institutional role has gained enormous importance, which leads to the need for an in-depth case study on this institution and its impact on the Brazilian internationalization ecosystem. Thus, the current work aims to present a new business ecosystem concept – the internationalization ecosystem – whilst presenting a theoretical framework to explain its nature, uniqueness and dynamics, in order to support its conceptual integration with modern International Business (IB) theories. Based on this framework, it also seeks to analyse the institutional role of ApexBrasil in the Brazilian internationalization ecosystem, allowing the development of strategies for its optimization. The research is characterized as a Case Study with an interpretive perspective, of an essentially qualitative nature, within a functionalist paradigm aiming at the development of an objective, applicable and, to a certain extent, measurable understanding of the phenomenon. The collection and interpretation of data will use a range of techniques including Grounded Theory, Thematic Analysis, In-depth interviews, Content Analysis and Bibliographic/Documental Analysis. In its initial stage, the research has already achieved relevant results, demonstrating a considerable distance between the Brazilian academia and ApexBrasil, pointing to a considerable research gap on ApexBrasil’s impact on economy and society, which points to potential inefficiencies in the Brazilian internationalization ecosystem dynamics. . The research has also presented an internationalization ecosystem framework, embracing four ecosystem concepts: business, entrepreneurial, innovation and platform, in order to draw from them the core elements necessary to understand the multi-layered nature of the internationalization phenomenon. Theoretically, on conceiving the internationalization ecosystem in its own right, the work contributes to encouraging the pursuit of studies on ecosystem integration and replication, which is still lacking in most IB literature. As its practical contribution, the research presents a framework on which organizations in general and ApexBrasil particularly may locate themselves based on their objectives, dynamics and interactions, being, thus, an instrument to optimize internationalization in many spheres.
