SUMMARY:

Every day we purchase a good or service and are faced with choosing the type of payment to complete the transaction. This decision making may be influenced by several factors. To investigate why and where customers use different payment methods, two tests were developed. The first presents a review of the literature on payment methods and consumption through a systematic search in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The review, in addition to presenting the main discussions and discoveries in the literature, made it possible to identify gaps in the studies and direct the empirical research. The second essay contextualizes the intention of the empirical study that will be developed through a Central Bank of Brazil database that collected information on the payment habits of citizens across the country. The data provide a unique combination of information on choice of payment method and type of good/service purchased with detailed information on socio-demographic data and consumer preferences from a nationally representative consumer survey. The results seek to reveal the factors that influence consumer choices and consumption patterns.
