SUMMARY:

With an eminent process of reviewing the special program for access to higher education institutions provided by Federal Law No. 12.711/2012 (Quota Law), the first affirmative action policy in higher education of national scope, with reservation of places for students historically disadvantaged groups, will be turning 10 soon. Investigations that focus on the Brazilian context of reserving vacancies for quota holders are already growing, although still with a small amount when compared to the North American, Indian and Italian contexts. In addition, the analyzes, which are usually provided by the Human Capital Theory, are consistent with the analysis of the effect of quotas on student performance, with little emphasis being placed on the persistence of Brazilian quota holders. This research aims to analyze the impact of quota policies on the persistence in undergraduate courses at UFRN. For this, a logit regression model and the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method will be used. The database contains records of undergraduate students at UFRN, a sexagenarian institution with more than 25 thousand undergraduate students and with campus allocated on five campuses throughout the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This is one of the few Brazilian states where the proportion of students from public universities exceeds that of students in the private higher education network.
