SUMMARY:

the circular economy (CE) is a relatively recent concept which represents an economic model or paradigma of systemic approach, that prioritize the reinsertion of products and its waste in the supply chain, with the aim of promote the sustainable development and its correlated benefits. However, there are many barriers in areas such financial, structural, operational, attitudinal and technological (RITZÉN & SANDSTRÖM, 2017) that makes difficult the implementation of this concept. One of the elements to support the transition to the circular economy are the emerging information technologies, idea reinforce in the work of Khitous et al. (2020), that links 8 research trends in CE, which one of them is about "enabling CE throughout internet technologies, whose topics mention technologies like big data and internet of things (IoT) and presents a futures research direction of "How do smart (digital) technologies enable the transition towards CE". Considering the research gap about how the information technologies could improve the circular economy contexto through sustainable business models, the present research has the aim of investigate the role of information technologies in the business models of companies from recycling and waste management's sectors under a systemic approach of sustainability. In this field, it's looked to describe the employed technologies and the functionalities and values of the business model to, posteriorly, list how the technologies found helps to overcome the circular economy implementation problems, thus allowing to evaluate the potential of circularity of each technology. This study will be guided through systemic approach, especially by the integration of economic, environmental and social systems of sustainability (triple bottom line), besides the classical general system theory (BERTALANFFY, 1968), in function of systemic characteristics of circular economy (GHISELLINI, CIALANI & ULGIATI, 2016). The research concentrates on the qualitative methodology, being based on content analysis proposed by Bardin (2010), which embraces the processes of documental analysis, coding and categorial analysis. The Atlas.ti software is the employed tool to optimize these qualitative processes. Therefore, the research could contribute about the way the information technologies can support the transition for a circular economic model, highlighting the different types of technologies found and the sustainability systemic links.
