SUMMARY:

Organizations have responsibilities that include remunerating their shareholders and extending to social welfare and environmental preservation. Given this, Corporate Social Performance (CSP) seeks to measure socially required organizational behaviors, ie, it is a proxy for meeting social demands. It is a construct originated in the 1970s that in recent years has reached great academic interest. A portion of CSP studies involve its relationship to organizational performance (OP). Despite numerous studies, this theme is not fully understood. Theoretical and methodological deficiencies, as well as the omission of mediating variables were pointed as causes to explain the divergences found in previous studies. In this sense, since the 1990s, Stakeholder Theory (ST) has been systematically used to evaluate this relationship. More recently, complementary to and not conflicting with ST, internal resources, a central element of Resource-Based View (RBV), have also come to mediate the relationship between CSP and OP. However, its effects on this relationship are not fully understood, suggesting further studies. Due to its economic, ethical and environmental relevance, the compounding pharmacies segment is suitable for studies involving CSP. Thus, the main objective of this thesis was to evaluate the effects of internal resources on the relationship between CSP and OP of Brazilian pharmacies. Given the unavailability of data on internal resources, CSP and OP of master pharmacies, it was decided to measure these constructs through the perceptions of their managers. Thus, a systematic literature review on how stakeholder perceptions were used to assess CSP was developed. Among the findings of this review, the Carroll Model (1979) was the most used in previous studies and, therefore, its dimensions were used as a basis for the measurement of CSP in the present thesis. Internal resources were selected from the typology coined by Barney and Hesterly (2011) and the OP combines financial and non-financial indicators. The questionnaire was reviewed by a group of experts at focus group meetings. The research is characterized as hypothetical-deductive, applied, descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional and procedures, such as survey. The data collection plan foresees a stratified sample by Brazilian region. The data analysis technique to be used is structural equation modeling.
