SUMMARY:

This thesis has two main themes: e-waste and consumer behavior. E-waste refers to any electrical and electronic item that has gone through the disposal process. Consumers play a key role in responsible disposals, as they have the power to choose which devices to discard. In order to investigate these two topics, this thesis is divided into 3 articles. Article I aims to analyze the progress stage and flow of studied on e-waste and consumer behavior. Therefore, a systematized review was conducted with searches on e-waste and consumer behavior on a scientific basis(Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, Spell and Scielo). In order to select the articles, the following filters were applied: peer-reviewed publications, languages, type of publication, and research areas. Early results showed 1.991 potentially relevant references which went through selection strategies such as: duplicate, title reading, abstract and keywords reading, full reading and selection for evaluation. At the end, 39 articles were selected that were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively with the aid of software Bibliometrix® and Excel®. The results indicated that the themes addressed in the review are current. Most of the publications took place between 2012 and 2019, the first one being in 2009. The most adopted theoretical models used in the investigations were the Theory of the Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Norm-activation Theory (NAT). Theoretical gaps have been identified as: proposition of broader models, investigation of data privacy concerns in the disposal of smartphones, more detailed research on the influence of planned obsolescence and psychological obsolescence on electronic disposal, and research related to social desirability. In order to contribute to address the theoretical gaps pointed out in the article I, article II proposes a broader model on e-waste and consumer behavior, including the construct about data privacy concerns. Article II aims to outline a research model to represent the factors that influence the consumer's intention in the responsible disposal of smartphones. 39 articles were mapped in the literature that studied the responsible disposal of information and communication technology (TICS). After an analysis of the articles were identified as the most significant constructs to study the intention of responsible disposal of smartphones: the constructs that make up the TPB (attitude, social norms, and perceived behavioral control), the constructs that make up NAT (awareness of the consequences, attribution of responsibility and moral norms), and three more constructs that, although are not related in theories, demonstrated significance are the following: convenience of recycling, responsible disposals information and privacy concerns. The theoretical essay presented in article II presents a research model that integrates the TPB and NAT, pointed as the significant theories to investigate pro-environmental behaviors, and three more constructs that emerged from the literature. Article III of this thesis intends to empirically validate the research model proposed in article II. Article III aims to influence the consumer intention to dispose of smartphones. This research is descriptive with quantitative approach, the constructs were operated based on previous researches, then analyzed by structural equation modeling (SEM - Structural Equation Model). The present research intends to collaborate to create more effective regulations on responsible waste disposals, consumer awareness of the environmental and social impacts generated directly and indirectly by improper disposal of electronic waste.
