RESUMO:

Much has been discussed recently about volunteering and what motivates it to take such action. Volunteering grew in Brazil in 1935, when the Public Utility Declaration Act was created, a Brazilian law to manage the so-called welfare state, in which the state controls the private set of philanthropy. separation of what was understood as social law (Social Security and Consolidation of Labor Laws, for example), and what was seen as philanthropy until its consolidation in the early 1990s, with NGO discussions and recognition as strengthening organized civil society in addressing social issues, the holding of the Eco 92 conference, enshrining the concept of sustainable development and the creation of Law 9.608 / 1998, which regulates voluntary work in Brazil, better known as the Volunteering Law. As a result of these actions, Brazilian volunteering has grown both in consistency and in the number of volunteers. In a study by the UK Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), the 2012 World Giving Index - A Global View of Giving Trends, shows that Brazil has about 18 million volunteers. However, what motivates an individual to work voluntarily? In order to identify gaps within volunteering research and work on the motivations of volunteer work, this study seeks to answer these particular questions.
