RESUMO:

The decisions about mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are important for managers to consolidate their business and improve their productivity, specially, in a more globalized economy. Although, it has an important role in global economy, there are few studies about it, mainly in development economies. In the theoretical field, two major theories explain the M&A waves, the behavior theory, aguing that the waves are explained by moments of overvalued assets and the neoclassical theory arguing that industry shocks induce the waves of mergers and acquisitions. The present study gives support to behavior theory modificated, the agents when they perceive the approach of the end of a recessive cycle, take advantage of the fact that the assets prices are still depressed and make their M&A decisions. This way, it was utilized three regresion models to investigate this efect. the parcials results indicate that M&A activity could indicate the end of a recessive cycle and the begining of a new growth cycle.
