SUMMARY:

The rapid growth of wind power generation is aligned with the guarantee of reducing polluting gases in the atmosphere, being a source of clean and renewable energy with great potential to generate employment and income. These factors make wind energy in line with national energy goals and make up a portion of the country's energy matrix. Brazil is a country of continental dimensions and has regions with high incidences of lightning strike, in this environment the impacts caused by lightning strike in wind turbines and other components of a wind farm is one of the most important issues in the implementation and operation of the complexes. In addition, several parks are installed in mountainous areas or mountain ranges that have soil with peculiar geophysical characteristics and high resistivity, causing, in addition to greater exposure to lightning strike, a difficulty in ensuring effective flow of spurious currents to the soil. In some cases, in addition to the forced shutdown that causes the generating units to be unavailable, the recomposition through the replacement of machine components can be extremely expensive, given the dimensions and specificities of some components. In this way, the present work aims to analysis the behavior of voltage surges caused by the impact of lightning strike in wind farms, for which experimentally validated equivalent circuit models are used for the various components of the wind turbine, blades, tower, mechanical connection systems, and electrical, as well as the grounds. A standard wind farm with synchronous generators connected to the transmission network will be used to assess the voltage levels caused by the incidence of lightning at various points in the system. The simulations will be performed with ATP (Alternative Transients Program), through its graphical interface ATPdraw. During the simulations, changes in specific parameters are carried out to investigate the behavior of the system during the transient caused by the impact of lightning, so that scenarios that allow the validation and proposition of improvements about the response to lightning surges can be evaluated.
