SUMMARY:

The tresillo, a type of clave (timeline) with a strong presence in both African and American music, was chosen as a basis and starting point for the studies developed in this research. The main objective is to use rhythmic superimposition – and the technique of tempo modulation in some cases – on each of the characteristic notes of the tresillo, in order to change its subdivisions, to obtain alternative rhythmic patterns and apply these patterns in the performance of Brazilian rhythms with the drum set. The methodology of this work is based on the bibliographic review on the subject, with an emphasis on the search for concepts little used in Western musical conception, such as approaches developed from the analysis of African rhythms. Along with the deepening of the concepts of rhythmic superimposition and tempo modulation. Based on this set of concepts and with the combination of them, studies and arrangements will be prepared with a focus on the drum set associated with the context of Brazilian instrumental music. From this, recordings will be made both in solo and group format, to demonstrate, analyze and prove the functionality of the applications in a musical context. As a partial result, it is already possible to perceive that the use of rhythmic superimposition on the notes of the tresillo brings several possibilities of rhythms beyond the traditional, which can be applied in the creation of arrangements, improvisation and interpretation of the chosen musical piece. Another partial result of the research is the creation of the Modelo de Alteração das Subdivisões da Clave (MASC), which has been developed based on the Modelos para Processos Criativos em Percussão (MPCP) by Campos (2012). The use of rhythmic superimposition and tempo modulation to open up the range of possibilities for playing the tresillo, in particular, and the clave, as a whole, in addition to providing alternative paths to those traditionally known by musicians, sheds greater light on the historical origins and the use of these resources in the construction of musical language.
