SUMMARY:

Syphilis is a systemic infection, caused by Treponema pallidum transmitted most of the time by sexual and vertical means, being exclusive of the human being, can evolve to a chronic condition that can bring serious consequences when not treated early. This study aimed to analyze the activities of professionals from the city of Guamaré/ RN about the management of gestational, congenital and acquired syphilis it is an exploratory, comprehensive-interpretative study with a qualitative nature. We interviewed 10 health professionals (physicians, nurses working in Primary Care and Secondary Health Care. The instruments of material collection were: semi-structured interviews and documentary research, conducted between April and June 2019. The material was submitted to the technique of Thematic Analysis of Content and interpreted in light of the theoretical-methodological references adopted in the research. Such analysis has brought up three thematic categories: “perception of syphilis”; “difficulties for the prevention of syphilis”; and “actions for the control of syphilis”. The results indicate that professionals are informed about the treatment of syphilis, however, do not carry out prevention and disease control actions effectively, presenting, also, a perception supported in the biomedical paradigm. In addition, health education actions carried out by professionals are guided by a “bank education”, guided by the transmission and reproduction of knowledge.  Finally, it can be suggested that there is a need to invest in Permanent Education in Health in the city in focus with a view to empowering professionals and perhaps re-meaning the professional know-how about syphilis.
