SUMMARY:

The Integrative and Complementary Practices Policy (PICs) was established since 2006 in Brazil, through the Unified Health System (SUS) with emphasis on Primary Care. The Family Health Strategy (FHS) is a structuring and priority of the Primary Care (AB) work process. PICs have made considerable advances in PHC in Brazil in recent years, being today a strategic standard of the Ministry of Health to certify the quality of teams in Primary Care. This is a descriptive and exploratory study, based on the mixed approach, and aims to analyze the use of ICPs in the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in the municipality of Assú, located in the western region of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), with a population 57,644 inhabitants, thus being considered a medium-sized municipality. Data were collected through structured questionnaires with 74 FHS professionals and semi-structured interviews with 3 representatives of the Municipal Primary Care Management. For data analysis, thematic content analysis was used, according to Bardin. Regarding ethical aspects, the research project was approved under the opinion of the Ethics and Research Committee of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital (CEP / HUOL), under CAAE 15000919.4.0000.5292 and opinion number 3.440.908. As a result, it was observed that professionals understand PICS as something else, which can be complementary or substitutive depending on the context of use; The provision of PICS in the participants' routine is incipient and non-institutionalized, being reduced to the orientation on the use of medicinal plants and auriculotherapy with restricted offer to professionals of the Extended Family Health Center; AB management has voiced that it is sensitive to the need for PICS Effectiveness, although it does not provide substantial support for this. The main difficulties were the difficulty of acceptance of these practices by users, the lack of specific training of professionals and the lack of support and adequate funding at the management level.
