SUMMARY:

The skin is the largest organ of the body, indispensable for human life and essential for the physiological functioning of the body. Like any other organ, it is subject to aggression from intrinsic and extrinsic pathological factors that can trigger skin wounds. In Brazil, wounds affect the population in general, regardless of gender, age or ethnicity and constitute a serious public health problem. Thus, health professionals need to be qualified to serve this clientele, and must make use of protocols that systematize care. In this direction, a Basic Guide for Wound Prevention and Treatment (BGWPT) was prepared for the city of Natal, aiming to guide the conduct of nursing professionals in Primary Health Care (PHC). This Guide has been used by nurses in the health network since 2016. Thus, this research sought to analyze the results from the implementation of BGWPT, from the point of view of nurses. It is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach. Twenty nurses who work in the Family Health strategy and make regular use of BGWPT were interviewed. The data collection instruments were: questionnaire, direct observation and document analysis. The data were analyzed based on the technique of thematic content analysis proposed by Bardin, giving rise to two categories namely: ‘perception about BGWPT’ and ‘changes made after BGWPT implementation’. The results indicate that BGWPT is implanted in 95% of the health units of the PHC, allowing the standardization of care actions for people with skin lesions, accelerating the healing process of the lesions. In addition, satisfaction and safety in the conduct of nurses, in the management of the protocol, as well as the reduction of public spending on covering materials was evidenced, which can be attributed to the professional training and qualification of nurses who make systematic use of the Guide. It can be said that BGWPT has been contributing to the achievement of satisfactory results among health professionals, users and health services.
