RESUMO:

The main objective of the research was to know the perception of women about the practice of exclusive breastfeeding. This is an exploratory-descriptive study with a qualitative approach conducted with 16 mothers from Tangará - RN. Participants are registered and accompanied at the health units of the municipality, with at least one child over six months, whether or not breastfed and who agreed to participate freely. Data were collected through research in documents such as the medical records, the registration form used by the CHA and nursing books to verify the monitoring of these women in each team. As a tool for data collection, focus groups were applied to these women. The results show that all mothers are aware of the benefits that breastfeeding brings to their children, but they are not always able to fulfill this duty and often feel guilty about the failure of this practice bringing consequences that reverse those initially expected. As a contribution we highlight the creation of spaces for discussion and listening to these women within the health services.
