RESUMO:
The investigation of infant mortality is an important strategy that allows visibility to the profile of the deaths, and the good quality of the information is necessary to ensure the monitoring of deaths efficiency and support actions to control and prevention of new events. Despite important advances in information systems, in particular Information System Mortality (ISM), some studies point to factors that compromise the quality of information, especially those related to the completeness and consistency. This study aims to analyze the quality of investigations of infant deaths in the city of Natal/RN, in the period between 2010 and 2015. This is an epidemiological cross-sectional study, exploratory and descriptive, which will be held through a quantitative approach. The data of the municipal ISM were used, and included the deaths of children under one year of mothers living in Natal/RN, occurred the years between 2010 and 2015. The completeness and consistency were analyzed from the variables contained in Death Certificate (DC) and Summary Sheet (SS). The results showed that there was a gradual rise in the proportion of investigation of deaths reported over the years of the study, however were observed significant delays to completion. Fulfilment of the variables contained in the DC and SS was considered satisfactory, but some inconsistencies were found in the data showing the need to improve the quality of records in investigations.
