People with disabilities have, in general, hygiene and oral health compromised, focusing directly on the patient's condition. This situation is exacerbated in patients with motor or intellectual impairment, requiring usually a caregiver or guardian to assist in the achievement of oral hygiene in daily life. The objective of this study was to identify the perception and knowledge of caregivers of disabled people about oral health, as well as meet the oral health status of these, and its impact on their quality of life. It is considered that these perceptions can generate positive or negative actions to take care. They interviewed 50 caregivers who accompanied the special patients at the Dental Specialties Center of the city of Currais Novos / RN. This is a descriptive, exploratory, sectional search, with quantitative and qualitative approach, which focuses primarily on the caregivers of people with disabilities. To collect quantitative data it was applied a questionnaire consisting of two parts: the first part addressed the sociodemographic aspects; and the second part was composed by OHIP -14 index that sought to identify the impact of oral health on the quality of life of caregivers. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interview with the caregivers who agreed to answer it. Quantitative data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 and qualitative data were treated according to the content analysis technique the light of the theoretical framework of Minayo. The speeches emerged three thematic categories: conception healthy mouth, ways to take care of the mouth, conception of the edentulous. These categories allowed to capture the perceptions and knowledge of caregivers about oral health. The study results showed that the caregivers have a vision of oral health associated with the absence of oral problems, disregarding the social determinants involved in the health-disease. It is clear the need to implement educational and motivational programs that involving caregivers and patients under their responsibility, with a view to empowerment oral health.
