SUMMARY:

Atmospheric aerosols affect the planet's climate, altering the Earth's radiative balance. However, these estimates still have a high degree of uncertainty. In addition, they cause various problems in human health. The Northeastern region of Brazil (NEB) is affected by the intercontinental transport of particulate material, coming from Africa, from local sources such as biomass burning and combustion of fossil fuels. Although, there are few observed data in this region. Aerosols can be monitored via remote sensing from the surface, such as the Aerosol Robotic Network, or from satellites such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Numerical atmospheric chemistry models are also used to study aerosols, as they simulate the physics, chemists and dynamic processes involving the emission, production, transport and deposition of aerosols in the atmosphere. Realizing the gap in knowledge about aerosols in the NEB and its urban centers, it was noted the need to obtain a better knowledge of the chemical state of the atmosphere through numerical simulations. Thus, this work has the aim of improving the numerical simulations of atmospheric aerosols in the northeast of Brazil, through variationalassimilation of AOD data with the EURAD-IM model and use its results to evaluate the behavior of particulate material in urban areas in the NEB during the quarters of Jun-Jul-Aug of 2015 and Oct-Nov-Dec of 2017. Data from MODIS Deep Blue, Dark Target (10 km and 3 km) and MAIAC AOD products will be used. These products will be compared with the AOD data of the two available AERONET stations in Petrolina-PE and Natal-RN. The product(s) with the best results will be assimilated into the assimilation  system together with the EURAD-IM chemical transport model, using 5 nested grids, with a spatial resolution of 20 km over theNEB region, 5 km northeast of the NEB and 3 grids of 1 km over the urban areas of Fortaleza-CE, Recife-PE and Natal-RN. Sensitivity tests of the numerical system to the errors of the observations and the radius of influence of the covariance matrix of the model errors will be carried out. The results will be validated using AOD data from AERONET and PM10 and PM2.5 concentration data. With these results the behavior of the particulate matter simulated in high resolution in the cited urban areas will be evaluated. At the end of this work, the definition of the best AOD MODIS product for NEB is expected, as well as a numerical modeling system with data assimilation for transport simulation and processes from atmospheric aerosols over NEB, and a preliminary assessment of the behavior of high-resolution aerosols in the largest urban areas of NEB.
