SUMMARY:

Water, considered the most essential of natural resources, is present in man's vital functions and in the exercise of his numerous daily activities through the existence and maintenance of ecological and socioeconomic processes. Unlike surface water, underground reserves are not easily visible to the eye, but they are essential for global water security as they hold 97% of the planet's fresh and liquid water. The constant increase in demand, added to the spatial and temporal variability of water resources, makes its availability increasingly valuable and requires intense and effective management. Thus, this work aims to analyze the role of groundwater in mitigating the effects of drought and climate change in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The study area is the watershed of the Parnaíba River, which covers the states of Piauí (75.73%), Maranhão (19.02%) and Ceará (4.35%). In this sense, this study aims to: (1) analyze the contribution of groundwater in maintaining water availability and its temporal trend in order to understand likely changes in its long-term patterns (2) evaluate groundwater patterns in scenarios of climate change, with the use of hydrological modeling, emphasizing the mitigation of its effects in drought situations (3) analyze the current water supply, the management of underground water resources and the adaptation to climate variability and change, through indicators of water scarcity and vulnerability. Initially, the first steps involving hydrological modeling were carried out, to be used in the analysis that will involve climate change, as well as the flow regime from the headwaters region to the mouth of the Parnaíba river basin. The flow of groundwater origin (base flow) was estimated using physical-mathematical filters, which separate surface and groundwater runoff, as well as, through statistical tests, their trend analysis. The results show that the contribution of groundwater flow to the Parnaíba river flow is at least 70% of the total flow, which highlights the importance of groundwater in this hydrographic basin and its bordering states. It was also noted a tendency for a sharp drop over the years in the total flow and base flow in the five sections of the Parnaíba River (from the headwaters to the mouth) evaluated. The loss of annual flow reached 5.84 m3/s/year for the total flow and 4.64 m3/s/year for the base flow, expressive values in a basin of great scale and importance for the Northeast region. Therefore, there is a need to investigate hydrological processes, availability of water resources and the causes of their loss for efficient planning and management in the future.
