SUMMARY:

Drought is a natural phenomenon that brings serious impacts to ecosystems, and also to different socio-economic sectors of society.  This is a complex issue, a discussion that varies depending on the climatic and hydrological conditions of each study region. Therefore, this is a discussion that involves researchers from different areas of science. In this sense, the present work aims to make an analysis of the monthly average precipitation in the region of the Piancó-Piranhas-Açu Hydrographic Basin with the support of techniques from the field of geostatistics, making use of the following methods of spatial interpolation: The Inverse of Distance (IDW), Closest Neighbor (KNN), and Ordinary Kriging (OK) that considers the degree of spatial dependence by variographic analysis. In order to compare the three univariate interpolators and identify the areas of the study region with precipitation below the expected normal, making an association with the weak, strong and moderate events of El Ninõ and La Ninã.
