The high growth rate of the urban population directly contributes to the increase of cities in number and territorial expansion. As the urban region increases, a series of environmental problems arise or are intensified in the urban climate, one of them being the urban heat island, which is a phenomenon defined as the increase in air temperature in the urban center about their rural. The Brazilian Northeast is influenced by the Trade winds, and the coastal region has the occurrence of sea and land breeze circulation, making it necessary to investigate the interaction between the urban heat island and the circulation of breezes. This work aims to use an atmospheric model to characterize the urban heat island for two coastal cities in Brazilian Northeast and to simulate the urban heat island based on a future projection of the land use and land cover. Initially, the urban region of the city of Fortaleza was analyzed. The atmospheric model WRF was used in version 4.3.1 and the dynamic downscaling method, with initial and boundary conditions data from ERA-5 provided by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the simulated period being November 01, 2019, to November 10, 2019. A linear regression test was realized with the air temperature data from the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) and the reanalysis of ERA-5. It was found values of 90.4% for the coefficient of determination and 95% in coefficient correlation. The preliminary results obtained with the modeling indicate the occurrence of the heat island over the city in the period between night and dawn when compared with the ERA-5 data, it was obtained more expressive results for the characterization of the event, with a variation of 1.8 to 3.6 °C between urban and rural environment. Regarding the circulation of breezes, was no observed change in the sea breeze circulation. It was also observed that due to the low negative variation in air temperature during the night, the land breeze circulation in Fortaleza city tends to weaken since in the neighboring cities a temperature variation of around -1°C was observed between the continental environment. and the ocean.
