SUMMARY:
The Doppler S-Band polarimetric weather radar installed in the city of Natal, Rio Grande
do Norte, in the northeast of Brazil is operated by the National Center for Monitoring and
Natural Disaster Alerts (Cemaden). This radar is an important tool for estimating
precipitation and, consequently, for assessing meteorological systems in the region covered
by the radar. Due to the important ability of the radar to estimate precipitation and physical
properties of hydrometeors in three dimensions , this work proposes to study polarimetric
signatures of the precipitating systems, characterizing the precipitation by the rain gauges
and the radar, validating the radar estimates and describing the physical characteristics,
morphological and polarimetric systems in 2014. The study area is centered in the city of
Natal, with a radius of 240 km. Data from polarimetric variables will be used: horizontal
reflectivity, differential reflectivity, specific differential phase and correlation coefficient
extracted from volumetric sweeps of the radar and data from the 19 pluviometric stations
from Cemaden that are distributed in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The data will be
processed by a series of treatments for a better evaluation and, then, statistical analyzes
will be carried out through the application of techniques and calculations of statistical
errors and exploratory analyzes with the generation of representative fields and dispersion
graphs, altitude diagrams, histograms and boxplots. Thus, it is expected to obtain
extremely relevant results, collaborating with the scientific community in improving
precipitation estimates by satellite and in parameterizing clouds in the weather forecast
models.
