RESUMO:

Atmospheric aerosols are climatic agents that influence the radiative balance of the atmosphere mainly due totheir complex interaction with solar radiation, which can spread or absorb radiation as well as alter the microphysical properties of clouds. Some numerical atmospheric chemical transport models use the data assimilation technique to study the behavior of aerosols and their effects in order to improve model simulations. Thus, the objective of this work is to verify the impact of atmospheric aerosols on the atmosphere of the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP) including remote sensing and in-situ measurements using a three-dimensional variational assimilation method (3D-Var) of the European Air Chemical-atmospheric Pollution Dispersion / Inverse Model (EURAD-IM). This work is part of the “Climate Change in Metropolitan Regions of Brazil project” (KLIMAPOLIS) and aims to establish and develop a long-term cooperative research and structure composed of research institutions and services in Germany and Brazil, which will address issues of coevolution urbanization, climate change and air pollution in metropolitan areas of Brazil. The city of São Paulo (SP) was chosen to be the target of this study because it stands out as a financial, industrial and commercial center with regional, national and global coverage. In addition, its population is exposed daily to and directly affected by air pollution. Thus, an advanced data assimilation system based on the 3D-Var method, coupled with the EURAD-IM model, will be used to assimilate the optical depth-of-aerosol data from Lidar system's (IPEN-SP), the solar photometer Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) (SP) and 10 μm particulate matter concentration data from CETESB automatic monitoring stations during the year of 2016. With the model adapted to the area of interest, it is expected to obtain improved results by aerosol data assimilation that could significantly contribute to a better understanding of the influence of aerosols on  air quality and climate of MASP, with a later application to other Brazilian urban centers, specifically in the Northeast, during the second phase of the project.
