The basins of the São Francisco and the Paraná River are two large basins with large
electricity production capacity. Among which we can highlight large plants as are Itaipu,
Furnas and Porto Primavera. The areas of these basins cover large cities such as Curitiba,
Campinas, São Paulo and parts of other states such as Bahia, Minas Gerais, Sergipe, Alagoas
and Pernambuco. This paper presents a methodology to verify homogeneous areas of rainfall,
and verify trends and points of discontinuity (structural breaks) in temporal rainfall series. The
study softened 18 sub - basins in total, 10 of the San Francisco 8 of the Parana River. The
data are distributed grid points with a resolution 0.5 x 0.5 degrees derived from observation
and weather provided by CPC (Climate Prediction Center). According to preliminary results
were we identify three homogeneous regions of the basin of the Rio São Francisco (SF1, SF2,
SF3). These regions had average statistically equal rainfall. Also identified three homogeneous
regions in the Paraná River basin (PN1, PN2, PN3), averaging statistically equal rainfall.
Further analysis identified discontinuity points (structural breaks) significant in the series
temporal precipitation of some sub - basins of the São Francisco and the Paraná River, like
Urucuia, Paracatu, Upper São Francisco, Parnaı́ba, Grande (Paraná) and others. These breaks
show that precipitation series do not behave form homogeneous within each sub - basin, so that
there is distinct periods with precipitation above and below the overall average.
