SUMMARY:

Ecological restoration plays a crucial role in addressing the urgent challenges of ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change. In regions such as the Caatinga, which faces unique climatic challenges, restoration can promote carbon sequestration in recovered areas, strengthening the potential for climate change mitigation and contributing to the sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems. This study seeks to identify effective restoration techniques and assess their impact on carbon accumulation, tree species and seedling characteristics, with a view to optimizing biomass in semi-arid ecosystems. The study involved six tree species native to the Caatinga and implemented five planting treatments in 12m x 8m plots, spaced 2 meters apart, replicated five times. These treatments included the control (no treatment), drip irrigation, mulch, a combination of irrigation and mulch, and agroforestry. The seedlings were categorized based on the dimensions of the roots (small or large) and the aerial part (small or large), and measurements of height, diameter at soil height, aerial biomass and water content were recorded in different units of measurement. The results indicate that the "Agroforestry" treatment performed well in terms of carbon accumulation, However, it is worth noting that this treatment received the same amount of water as the “water” treatment. In addition, the Jurema preta species had the highest aerial biomass values compared to the other species analyzed, and is recommended for planting in greenhouse gas neutralization projects. The results on carbon accumulation in the form of seedlings are still being analyzed.
