SUMMARY:
Providing accurate information on population status and habitat preferences is essential for developing conservation strategies for shorebirds. Using key species to understand patterns of habitat use can contribute and extend conservation benefits to other shorebird species that share the same habitat. The aim of this study was to analyze the habitat requirements of the endangered Wilson’s Plover (Charadrius wilsonia) and the American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus), breeding shorebirds residing strictly along the coast, correlating the presence of the species with environmental and anthropic variables, to understand which variables influence the occupancy patterns of the species in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network site Banco dos Cajuais, in the semi-arid central portion of the coastal zone of Brazil. Estimating the habitat use and detection of shorebirds, as well as the correlation of habitat covariates for use and detection, were achieved with occupancy models. Static occupancy models were used and analyzes performed in the MARK program. The searches for individuals were made through two transects, where 15 points were distributed, separated every 300 meters. Sampling units consist of a buffer with a radius of 150 meters around each point. The searches took place in two seasons, rainy and dry. We collected covariate data at the local and landscape scales. Data analyzes are ongoing.
