SUMMARY:

Recently, the memory of direct users of natural resources (fishers, hunters, gatherers, and farmers) has been used to reconstruct information related to resource status in a temporal perspective. The use of memory as a likely viable source of past information not otherwise available has been particularly encouraged in the case of artisanal fisheries, an activity with a large data deficit. Artisanal fisheries account for ⅓ of the world's fisheries production and ensure the food security and livelihood of residents of fishing communities. Finding accurate ways to use memory to provide data regarding catch and fishing effort would help in better designing effective fishery management strategies. The objectives of this chapter were to access fishermen's memory in order to: (i) obtain estimates of past catches and population trends for four species exploited in Brazilian artisanal fisheries; and (ii) evaluate the trend of variation in the average weight of the species of interest. Four fisheries were selected, three of them located in the northeast (Rio Grande do Norte) and focused on Lutjanus analis (mutton snapper), Coryphaena hippurus (dolphinfish) and Opisthonema oglinum (sardine), and one located in the southeast (Rio de Janeiro), focused on Mugil liza (tainha). A total of 131 interviews were conducted in the Ponta do Tubarão Sustainable Development Reserve (RDSEPT/RN) and 74 in Araruama (RJ) using a semi-structured questionnaire. The questionnaire covers questions about average catch, maximum catch, total catch and average weight of the species for the last five decades. A decline was observed in the average catch of mutton snapper, dolphinfish and sardine between 1980 and 2020, as well as in the total catch of mullet between 1970 and 2020. A downward trend in the average individual weight of mutton snapper and mullet was also detected in recent decades, particularly from 2000 onwards. The maximum catch of mutton snapper remained constant, but the best catch of dourado and sardine decreased in recent years. The approach used in this study provides for rapid and cost-effective data collection. Furthermore, the information acquired through the interviews can subsidize initiatives for the management and conservation of fishery resources reconstruct information related to the status of resources in a temporal perspective.
