SUMMARY:

The preservation of biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services increasingly depend on environmental conservation on private lands. Although it is often believed that private protected areas have less capacity to conserve biodiversity than public areas, there is a variety of studies refuting this idea. Private conservation is globally increasing, but its management characteristics and levels of use and protection vary from country to country. In common, the role of actors such as the State, companies and non-governmental organizations stands out, which influence management, operation and administration of these areas. Although conservation planning initiatives are important, they are mostly based on studies that focus on ecological data, ignoring human and social dimensions. In this work, our objective is the understanding of factors regarding political and social context that contributed to the dynamics of creation of the Brazilian Private Natural Heritage Reserves (PNHR) and what their current situation is. We applied an online questionnaire to owners and managers, collected and analyzed data focusing on motivations, difficulties, Receiver support and social actors involved in these processes. Aspects of perceived changes were also addressed, with emphasis on land use and occupation on the property where the reserves were created. Our results showed that about 70% of the owners' motivations for the voluntary creation of private reserves were mostly conservationist, although not exclusively. This was a pattern, regardless of region or biome, scope of creation (federal, state or municipal) or type of owner (individual or legal entity). Economic and property defense reasons had less influence on decision makig of land conservation. 42% of owners had difficulties in the creation process, regardless of time, most of them being bureaucratic (73%). Only 57% of owners received support for the creation of the reserve, 67% of which came from Non-Governmental Organizations. For the owners, during the reserve creation process, financial support was more significant than technical support.
