RESUMO:

Artificial eutrophication is a common problem in aquatic ecosystems that deteriorates water quality and biodiversity. The occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms is an advanced stage in the eutrophication process. Among the restoration techniques, the application of a flocculant (e.g. polyaluminum chloride) combined with the addition of natural clay has been shown to be efficient. The objectives of this study are: i) characterize, through a scientometric approach, the evolution of knowledge about cyanobacterial bloom along the years, and quantify the efforts devoted to overcome the problem; and ii) evaluate, through a laboratory experiment, the effect of the combined use of flocculant and natural clay in controlling eutrophication in a shallow lake of the semiarid region of Brazil. For the scientometric analysis, we used the “Web of Science” database with the search function “TS = ((cyanobacteri* or blue green algae or cyanoprokariote oy cyanophyceae) and (mass accumulation or bloom or domina*))”, from 1969 to June 2016. For the experiment, three sets of experiments were performed: to obtain the best PAC dose, the best clay dose and to test the combined use of these compounds. The scientometric study revealed the need for more studies aiming at developing techniques to solve and/or mitigate the issue of blooms. The use of flocculant and natural clay had a synergistic effect on the reduction of top chlorophyll-a in the water column and was as efficient as the use of modified clay with lanthanum.
